How to Stress-Test a Retirement Budget for Morocco
Move beyond a low cost-of-living headline by testing housing, healthcare, exchange rates, travel and one-time relocation costs.

Use income that is expected to continue after relocation and distinguish it from optional withdrawals or temporary work. Compare that dependable amount with a comfortable monthly estimate, then with an adverse case that includes higher rent, coverage costs and travel. The remaining margin matters more than the lowest possible total.
Model the expenses that cross borders
Local groceries and services are only part of the plan. Add U.S. tax preparation, private health coverage, return flights, family support, imported preferences, financial account fees and any home-country commitments. Annual expenses should be divided into a monthly reserve instead of appearing as surprises.
Separate moving from living
Deposits, temporary lodging, flights, documents, furnishing and professional reviews belong in a relocation fund. A separate emergency reserve protects against health events, urgent travel and an early return. Using one pool for both creates a misleading sense of safety.
Refresh, document and decide
Record the date, source and currency for every major assumption. Refresh rent, insurance, flights and exchange rates before signing or paying. The result is not a forecast; it is a decision model that shows which assumptions have the power to break the plan.
Sources and verification
Open the current source before acting; official rules and provider terms can change.
